Sports in the Age of COVID-19: How We Need to Adapt

When the world is trying to fit in with the new normal due to the ongoing global pandemic of covid-19, talking about the necessity of sports may seem unnecessary to many of us. As we are getting used to our confined lives and all our communion with friends’ family and acquaintances is through virtual means, it is hard to stay physically activated. Although many of us may question the necessity of any physical activity or sports when our economic situation is in turmoil but it is still a necessary practice that we should indulge in.

Physical and mental fitness is the foundation of our life, keeping yourself fit is not only advantageous to our physical health but also for the health of our minds. Many kinds of research show that indulging in any sport or exercise keeps the person energetic for all the other activities throughout the day. But due to the current situation children are the ones who are getting the most hit for this new normal. As many of the other activities have been back to their flow, education and sports are yet to resume.

Precautions Can be Taken to Play Sports During the COVID-19 Pandemic
As everyone is trying to adjust their life to the sudden changes, educational institutions will also come back on track in no time. But the primary concern that every parent has for their child during covid is how my children would avoid the crowd and play a sport during COVID-19 without getting infected. To handle such a situation, Indian sports schools and academic schools are already taking various safety measures for their student’s safety.

The first and foremost rule that we all have to follow during practice is sanitizing our hands. It may be difficult to wear a mask in active sports which includes running and cardio but other than that wearing a mask is the most effective way to stay away from covid.

Sports schools are trying to emphasize no-contact sports during the pandemic. Sports like cricket, badminton and table tennis are non-contact sports where the player don’t need to touch each other. So, they can maintain a healthy distance during the practice. A thermal scanning to check one temperature before entering the school will also help. As fever is one of the prime symptoms of the contagious viral disease keeping track of their body temperature is an effective safety precaution.

Another effective way to play sports amidst the COVID-19 pandemic is practicing in a small group. It is best to allow smaller groups during a practice session as this will help the athletes in maintaining social distance and the odds of spreading the virus will decrease.

Also, you can make your kids stay home for playing an indoor game, installing a small table tennis board or getting a small net will do the trick. This method will ensure that your child can play safely without the fear of getting affected by the virus.

Abstaining from active sports has greatly impacted our youth population. Students are now more interested in spending their time on screens than in a field. According to some reports, many children suffer from obesity due to sitting in front of their computer or Television for a long time. Also not getting the opportunity to play with their friends and getting no exposure to any social mingling for a long period is leading to severe depression. To avoid this situation children need to go back to playing sports or indulge themselves in any physical activities. Following the rules and safety measures are necessary to stop this virus, but staying fit and active is also equally important for us.
